Developmental Writing

Words – so innocent and powerless as they are, as standing in a dictionary, how potent for good and evil they become in the hands of one who knows how to combine them.” – Nathaniel Hawthorne

The summer before my first child was born, I attempted to climb a mountain. In truth, it was more “hiking” than “climbing,” but the Colorado peak topped out above 14,000 feet. Because I set out to do it alone, I was inadequately prepared, and when the daily line of early-afternoon thunderstorms rolled in—and lightning began flashing around the rocky, exposed terrain—I had not yet reached the summit. I thought I was close, and as the thunderheads marched closer I pressed on, but then I skirted an outcropping and saw the harsh reality: I was still a long way from the top. There was nothing for it but to turn around and descend.

If you are in need of a developmental writer, then you have come a long way already, and for this you deserve applause. The end may be tantalizingly close, or it may be merely a shimmer on the horizon. You recognize, though, that you need help to successfully cross the remaining distance.

At this point, your manuscript is at least 50% complete, yet substantial portions of the book need to be written. You have the overall concept, structure, and content planned. You may have rough drafts of the rest of the book, or you may only have an outline of the book’s remainder at this point and need help fleshing it out into full sections or chapters.

This service includes both creation of content and the thorough editing of a developmental edit. I work closely with you in writing the needed text according to your goals, style, and voice; I make recommendations for large-scale and small-scale revisions to the existing content; and I edit all of it together into a finished, polished whole. For more information on what the editing process entails, see Developmental Editing.

As with developmental editing, this service begins with an initial evaluation, after which I propose and discuss a writing and revision plan, and we mutually decide on the scope, specifics, and approach for implementing this plan. All writing and edits are then performed in close collaboration with you.
